Dorothy "Jane" McVeigh Raney, a Peace Corps Volunteer in Dagupan, Philippines, 1984-86, passed away on March 30, 2007, in Bellingham, Washington. She was 83. Her daughter, Michal A. Handy, said that her mother, who raised four children before her Peace Corps service,  "treasured that experience and her Peace Corps family connections until her death."

Jane entered Mills College as a Trustees Scholar in the fall of 194l. While earning a BA in art history, she also volunteered as a Red Cross nurse’s aid, attended some of the first meetings of the United Nations in San Francisco and became a member of the San Francisco Potters’ Guild. Her ceramic work was exhibited in several museums in the Bay Area. After graduation she moved to New York City to attend the Art Students League, studying figure and composition.

In 1947 she was hired by Washington State College as an instructor in drawing, composition, jewelry and ceramics.    She moved with her husband and four children to Davis, Calif., in 1954, obtained a teaching credential at UC Davis and taught art at nearby Vacaville High School until the family moved to Bellingham in 1966.  She entered the Peace Corps when she was 61, which exemplified, in the words of her family, "her commitment to world peace and led her to new understandings of economic and social injustice and the evanescence of life."  Her family said that she would have been pleased if anyone, in her memory, donated a pint of blood or contributed to the work of Planned Parenthood, the Whatcom County (Wash.) Hospice or the Audubon Society. -- From the family and the notice published in the Bellingham Herald.

Kira Biese - Survived Avalanche! Needs words of support from fellow RPCVs:
I'm writing on behalf of Kira Biese who served in the Philippines in the 90s. Kira just survived 12 hours buried under an
avalanche in Whistler, Vancouver, BC, two weeks ago. Being an expert in avalanche survival, she put her knowledge to use and managed to keep
herself alive in spite of internal injuries and having broken her back in three places. She has just survived her 4th back operation at
Vancouver General Hospital, so she's fighting to stay alive. Any of you Philippines RPCVs who know her might want to send her cards and words
of support. I'm sure she can use all of the kind words that you have at this time. Allegra K. Troiano (Senegal 80-82) President- Milwaukee Peace
Corps Association
You can direct mail to: Kira (Biese) Cailles, Vancouver General Hospital, 855 West 12th Avenue Vancouver B.C. V5Z 1M9

Kidney Transplant Needed: (posted March 2005)
The person in need is Sonia (Lorena) Valentine, wife of Bill Valentine, Group 21, who was assigned to Legazpi.  Sonia, from Daraga, was a teacher, and since Bill and Sonia returned to the States in 1970, they have both worked as educators. Most recently  Sonia has been the headmistress of a private school near Boston,  although she had to quit a few months ago due to her illness.  Here is the text of a card Sonia sent last week to friends:

I am in need of a kidney transplant! Would you consider being a donor? Your kindness will help me live and continue to enjoy the beauty and  radiance on this earth. To be a donor, any blood type is acceptable. Ideally, a donor would  have B+ or O blood type, age 18-65 years, and be healthy; no history of  cancer, hepatitis, diabetes, kidney stones, high blood pressure, and/or obesity.  The surgery is laparoscopic. Hospital stay is three days and full recovery within three-four weeks. Kidney donors are able to lead a  normal, active life after recovery.  If you have any questions about being a donor, please contact my transplant coordinator at Brigham and Women's Hospital: Julie Halloran,  (617) 732-6866.

New Book:
After retiring from a long career in international development, which started with Surigao del Sur PCV service and ended after 29 years with USAID in six countries, I started hobby-writing fiction and creative nonfiction about my adventures. So far, I've had nine stories and reflections published in various obscure journals. I've pulled them together in a self-published book called Creative Recollection of a Foreign Service Life. Four of the stories take place in the Philippines.  (See http://www.peacecorpswriters.org)   --Mary Cameron Kilgour, Group VII (1962-64).
