About PCAFPD

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE FOUNDATION?
The Foundation supports Philippine development by creating educational opportunities for young Filipinos who indicate a willingness to contribute to the development of their country. The Foundation grants scholarships to deserving students with demonstrated financial need who otherwise could not pursue their education.  The Foundation has contributed to other development projects over the years, including the Peace Corps Partnership Program.

  HOW IS THE FOUNDATION MANAGED?
The Foundation is administered by an elected Board of Directors, who serve without compensation. The Board meets regularly in Washington, D.C. (Visitors are always welcome)  Advances in technology have enabled us to operate the Foundation with board members located in other parts of the U.S. and in the Philippines.  Our Vice President in Manila, Mr. Roland de Jesus, monitors all scholarships, deals with school administrations, and provides guidance and support to the scholars.  Join the PCAFPD email discussion group or email us for more information.

In 2005, PCAFPD President Maureen Carroll and VP Carol Radomski made a field visit to the Philippines. Click here for highlights of the field visit.

HOW DOES THE FOUNDATION RAISE FUNDS?
The Foundation raises funds through direct contributions from former Peace Corps Volunteers, staff, Filipinos, and friends of the Philippines. Many Filipino-Americans choose the Foundation as a way to support students in their home country.  There is no formal office in Washington or the Philippines, and care is taken to keep overhead costs low so that most of the funds are devoted to scholarships.

ARE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FOUNDATION TAX DEDUCTIBLE?
Yes. The Foundation is a legal, publicly supported, non-profit corporation organized under the Laws of the District of Columbia. Contributions to it are tax deductible under Sec. 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

  HOW ARE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS GRANTED?
In advance of the Philippine academic year, the VP in Manila circulates scholarship announcements and applications via a network of community contacts, Peace Corps Volunteers, and school officials throughout the country. Check out the application page on this website to view or print the application. Completed applications are screened by the Manila office prior to submission to Washington for final review and award. Applicants submit information about their educational goals, economic circumstances, transcripts of grades, and recommendations from schools and community leaders.  The Board of Directors reviews all applications and ranks applicants based on candidate potential for contribution to Philippine development, financial need, academic record and community activities.

  WHAT DOES A SCHOLARSHIP COVER?
Scholarships may be granted for study in any academic or technical discipline and may be specifically tailored to individual needs. The Foundation encourages applicants with career interests in underserved fields. All scholarships cover the cost of tuition and fees, an allowance for books, and a stipend to help defray living expenses such as room, board, and transportation.. Continued payments are contingent on academic progress. Scholarships are granted to the completion of a degree or certificate program, so long as the student maintains Foundation standards. Depending on the school and the course of study, full scholarship costs range from $500 to $1500 a year.  Individuals or groups may sponsor a scholar for a donation of $1000 per year.

HOW MANY STUDENTS DOES THE FOUNDATION SPONSOR?
The number of scholarships awarded in any one year is determined by the funds available, the quality of the applications, and the number of continuing scholars. In recent years, the Foundation has awarded between six and ten new scholarships each year, and supports between thirty and forty-five scholars in a given year.
